Moving to a new country can be a challenging process in all aspects, whether for personal or professional reasons, and whether it was your option or you have been forced due to extenuating circumstances such as war displacement, it can pose a source of distress on how to pursue your current profession in this new environment. How can you develop? Do you have the required documents? Are there specific exams and qualifications you should have acquired? And many more questions shall be discussed in this blog, targeting the healthcare industry in the United States of America (US). Foreign doctors can practice medicine in the US, and you have to go through certain steps after acquiring a certified license from your hometown, and in this case Sudan.
For doctors practicing medicine, you need to first Pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 and Step 2, which assess your basic science and clinical knowledge and skills. You also need to get certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), which evaluates your readiness to enter residency or fellowship programs in the US. After that and Currently, you have to take the Occupational English Test (OET) and meet the requirements of one of 2 pathways which Sudanese doctors usually take:
● If you have a valid medical license: OET + a valid medical license
● If you don’t have a valid medical license: OET + mini–Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) exams. Which are shorter versions of the OSCE, and are usually used to assess a specific skill or competency. They can be used to assess a range of skills, including clinical examination, procedures, communication skills, data interpretation, and emergency assessment. Having all that done, you have already made great progress and passed the biggest steps so congratulations. Now you should apply for the ECFMG certification where you will need Step 1 and 2 exam results and approval for either of the above pathways in hand. The Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) is the centralised online application service you’ll use to deliver your application, along with supporting documents, to residency programs. And it's the next step to prepare for the Matching process, by streamlining the residency application process for applicants, their Designated Dean's Offices, Letters of Recommendation (LoR) authors and program directors. By providing applicants with the ability to build and deliver their application and supporting materials individually or as a package to programs, the ERAS system provides a centralised and flexible solution to the residency application and document distribution process. Having done that, you will take interviews. After taking the interviews, comes the step of The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), also called The Match, which is a United States-based private non-profit non-governmental organisation created in 1952 to place U.S. medical school students into residency training programs located in the United States teaching hospitals. If successful, you will receive interview invitations from the accepting institutions that will mainly take the interviews virtually, and at the end of this pathway, receiving acceptance from institutions after the interviews will mean that you have successfully guaranteed entry to the US, with an established authority to start practising medicine in the United States of America. Congratulations again on making it to this point, you have gone so far.
